Syrens Tips page

Welcome to my tips page, I hope you'll find something here that will help you get more enjoyment out of the game.

At the bottom of the page are hints and tips on doing the Swamp of the Dracae Quest, if you prefer to do this without hints, please ensure you do not read the last section!

Fishing

The wiki Fishing page explains how to go about fishing and contains tables for rewards and benefits that can be obtained from fishing. Here, I want to share soe tips and hints as to how to maximise your fishing.

Fishing strategy The first thing you need to do is decide what benefits you're hoping to get from fishing, in other words why are you doing it? When you've decided that, you can then maximise whatever returns you're looking to obtain. Eg, if you're fishing for a hp regen food source for yourself, you may find fishing short and medium more productive than long and if you're fishing for resale, fishing long will always produce better quality fish.

Fishing points You may also want ot consider how best to maximise your fishing points, bearing in mind that it can take longer to catch a larger fish giving higher fishing points than a smaller fish giving less. Also, it's quicker to land a smaller fish at short range than a larger higher point fish at longer range.

You'll also receive more fish 'pieces' as your fishing point tally rises and you receive higher value Memership Cards.

Quest points Scallywag will give you a random number of quest points every 3 or 4 fish handed in, so if you're in it for the quest points lots of smaller short range fish may be a better tactic.

Practice Tomes You'll receive 1 practice tome 1 practice point every 500 fishing points.

Landing Big Ones! There are two main ways you'll lose a fish - through the line breaking and from it drifting off the line. To prevent the first make sure you slacken the line each time you see a taut tighten or tug message and wait until the Your line slackens... message appears. If you follow this advice, your line should not break. Fish drifting off the line is more tricky as sometimes there's nothing you can do to prevent it and it nearly always always happens when the Your line drifts to the... message appears right before or after a tug. You can often prevent it by ensuring you deal with the drift message before the tug, as you cannot correct the drift problem in slack.

Experience

It's important to understand the distinction between the different experiences you can acheive and the differences in skills you spend it on. There are three types of experience you can gain, Combat, Crafting and General. Combat experience is gained through killing mobiles, Crafting experience through crafting skills like Smithing and Tailoring. General experience is gained through general activities such as Pick lock, Mining etc.

You can only use Combat experience on Combat skills and General skills, Crafting experience on Crafting and General skills and General experience on anything. It's important then to make sure you don't use Combat eperience on General skills when you could use Crafting experience that for some may be easier to obtain. Making sure you use the correct experience on each skill and by practicing most of thosr skills via player teaching well help to maxmise the use on experience earned.

Quest Zones Swamp of the Dracae

I don't think it would be right for me to tell people how to complete this, but I do feel that a few hints and tips may help people complete it whereas without them they wouldn't.

As the zone creator says, you have to read the room descriptions, it's almost guaranteed you won't complete it without doing this. Sure, sometimes key words you see may lead to nothing, but sometimes they will, so keep looking. The zone is description rich and beautifully coded and written, so don't expect to solve this in 5 minutes, this is going to take you some time to work out, so perservere.

It's important to filter out the 'key' information from the 'descriptive environment' and keep in mind what the quest is about, so look for clues in the room descriptions and from mobile speech.

Don't be put off if you keep getting zapped by the Hut forcefield and cant figure out why, keep looking and searching because you've missed something.

Leeches These can get annoying after a while as your hp's keep reducing so you may want to consider focusing on getting the items the old hag mentions. There's three of them and all the clues are there to find them, just make sure to look at things and inside things.

I would suggest a very strong build 40 skill or average 50+ build could complete the quest.

Look <item> Look <keyword> and Look <direction> are essential commands in this quest.
