Smithing
From Aeonian Dreams
Skill Type: Crafting
Cost: 10 practices
Available on Creation: Yes
Taught By: Dunwick, The Smithery, Reutgarten
In the same way as skilled smiths of old, crafted armored items for the warriors of the time, so can you craft your own armoured items. Blacksmithing forms one of the unique skills central to gameplay at Aeonian Dreams.
If you have the blacksmithing mastery, you can craft yourself metallic items, provided you can find yourself a smithery to work at. The main smithery is located in Reutgarten. Before you begin smithing, you must make sure you have enough raw materials in your inventory to complete the project (determined by the item's base weight, which can be found in the armor types and weapon types helpfiles). The quality of your product will largely be influenced by your mastery of blacksmithing, and the quality of your hammer.
Getting Started
To blacksmith there are really only a few things you need; the skill of blacksmithing, a hammer and some ore.
Hammers - Most new smiths will be taken under the wing of one of our older players who will give them their first hammer and ore, though if not then hammers are freely available at several of the shops within Reutgarten, or can sometimes be found for free within the trash bin at Dunwick's. Player made hammers will give the best smithed items, although to get started any hammer will do and will return the experience and gold needed to get a footing within the realm.
Ore - can be bought for a modest fee at Dunwick's, given to you by other players or mined from mines across the world. You do not have to possess the mining skill to mine for ore.
So you have your skill in place and have obtained a hammer from somewhere. The place to smith at is Dunwick's Smithery found in Southern Reutgarten at 11 south of recall, one west and two south. When you get there you request a job from Dunwick. He will ask you to make an item for him, specify the quality it should be and the material it should be made from. At beginner level, it is likely to be a very small item of poor quality from iron. To begin crafting you need to be holding or wielding your hammer and the syntax is as follows - smith <material> <item>. You can sit back for a few minutes whilst the code handles the smithing for you. On completion, give the finished item to Dunwick and depending on the quality produced he will reward you with experience, gold, questpoints and, on occasion, souls for a job well done. Experience gained from crafting can only be used to increase your character level or skill level within crafting or other non-combat skills, it cannot be used to increase levels in combat skills.
As your blacksmithing skill level rises the jobs that Dunwick offers you will be worth more and often players will make several attempts at achieving the quality requested in order to gain the highest possible return of experience, questpoints, gold and souls. Extra smithed items can be sold to one of the many NPC (non player character) booths across the realm, sold within the player's own personal booth or passed onto newer adventurers as starter equipment. Often it is simply discarded by the wealthier smiths into the trash can at Dunwick's, to be picked over by the more enterprising and frugal.
Smiths also craft to order, producing magnificent quality items that can be enchanted or imbued with spells to give extra stat boosts or damage during use. Sometimes this is another skill the smith offers himself, or the player will buy the item and take it to one of the specialist player enchanters for completion.
For the more experienced crafters you can also find smithing jobs to do at McDuggan's Smithy in the Stratosphere. The jobs are much like those that Dunwick requests but McDuggan requires items of higher quality created from rarer ores such as platinum, gold, silver, and titanium.
There is a clan for crafters, known as Halls of Mithril, and new smiths are encouraged to join and enjoy the benefits being a member brings.
